As a self-proclaimed night owl and someone who is self-employed, mornings are difficult for me! It’s strange because when I was in corporate I always chose to work earlier shifts so I could teach Pilates in the evenings. Now that I don’t have to teach until 5 pm most days, getting up before 10 am is a struggle! Not all fitness professionals are morning people! 🙂

I have learned a few tricks to get myself going in the mornings, and have made it my personal quest to be up by 8 am every day moving forward! Here are my top five tips to make your morning sparkle!

Set your outfit out for the day the night before

My wardrobe has changed a lot from when I was working in corporate. There are so many items in my closet that have gone untouched because now I live in racerbacks and leggings. My day usually consists of working on this blog, doing work for my social media clients, hitting the gym and then teaching at night. Unless I am meeting a client in person, I don’t have a reason for slacks. But, it’s still important for me to feel good even in my workout clothes since that is my uniform now.

I like to lay out my outfit the night before, pick my shoes and make sure I am looking good. It’s so easy to get frumpy when you work from home, and I admit I have my days, but when I feel a little dressed up I work a lot harder.

On to you: I challenge you this week to pick out your outfits the night before each day. Lay out everything from your hair accessories to jewelry to shoes. You may be surprised by how much time you save in the morning not having to dig through your closet to find the perfect piece. With that extra time, you can enjoy my second tip. 🙂

Cuddle with something or someone for an extra five minutes

Mornings are nice for my husband and I because he works from 1 pm to 9 pm, so we have all kinds of time to cuddle before he leaves for the day. One of our favorite things to do is just stay in bed and chat about our upcoming plans. Our puppy and cat are almost always on the bed with us until the last possible second.

What this does is create calming energy for the rest of the day. If you set your alarm to go off at the last possible minute, you are rushing around and frantic. You may miss out on small special moments to take a breath and start your day fresh.

On to you: If you don’t have a loved one living with you that you can cuddle with, then grab your favorite book or spend some time stretching. Giving yourself a few extra minutes to relish your time in bed a little more will help get you ready to conquer the day ahead.

Wash your face as soon as you jump out of bed

As soon as I am ready to get out of bed, I get my butt into the bathroom and wash my face and brush my teeth. I enjoy showers at night, so this is an important step to help me feel fresh and awake in the mornings.

Using a skincare line that I love makes me feel great in the morning. My skin feels soft and supple, I LOVE putting moisturizer and eye cream on, and maybe a little obsessed with those things.

On to you: Try a new skincare product that excites you and will help you achieve healthy dewy skin. When we are first waking up our skin looks dull and tired, but washing your face first thing in the morning will not only wake you up but your skin as well.

Make a killer breakfast each morning

If you’re anything like me, you can eat the same thing over and over until you’re sick of it. I am a creature of habit and don’t need to change things up too often. It’s overwhelming for me to think about constantly trying new recipes and cooking new things. If I know I like something {like oatmeal with almond milk, nuts, and fruit} I don’t see the need to reinvent the wheel.

If you are like me or not, plan a killer breakfast for your morning. Lately, I have been loving Trader Joes Garlic & Herb Chicken Sausage with a piece of toast and a little butter. It’s quick to make, delicious and includes protein, carbs and fat.

On to you: Come up with your own favorite recipes to make for breakfast. Maybe it’s a delicious protein muffin that you prep on Sunday and eat the rest of the week. Maybe you like a savory breakfast such as omelets or chicken sausage. Whatever it is, plan out what you want to have for the next week, and prep it in advance as much as possible. Starting your morning with a healthy breakfast is one of the best ways to kick start your day.

Get outside

Now that I have made my breakfast, I take my dog out for a walk. Breathing the fresh air outside after being inside all night is a great way to get your morning off to a bang. If I had a patio, I would love to have my breakfast and tea outside with a cozy sweater and slippers still on.

On to you: Even if you only have a few minutes while you are on your way to work, take a moment to savor that time outside. Even working from home I find that I don’t go outside as much as I initially thought I would. You have to set your intentions to make those moments memorable for you. Wake up a few minutes early to be able to take some extra time savoring your new morning routine.

I realize that we all have different schedules and priorities, but I promise if you start with even just one of these tips, your mornings will sparkle even brighter. If you are not a morning person, these tips will help you to enjoy your mornings that much more.
